Here in West Virginia, we are mourning the loss of former coach Bill Stewart, a native son who loved his home. He died Tuesday of a heart attack at the age of 59. He leaves behind a wife he regularly and affectionately referred to as, “My Bride,” and a son who is a junior in high school. He left no doubt that he loved his family, his state, and was universally praised as the friendliest coach anyone ever met. You can find more on Coach Stew here.
Below, I’ve shared a pregame speech from Coach Stew from a few years ago. He, then as interim coach for the departed Rich Rodriguez, famously guided a beleaguered team to one of the great underdog victories in (BCS) college football history. It was a win that kept West Virginia on track to remain a big-time program, eventually helping to land the University in an elite conference. He will be missed.
