I get that you want to end the book well, but please keep in mind the kids who have already read the first three and are hanging and waiting and maybe outgrowing the time in their lives when they will read stories like this. My daughter is almost 15, and she is definitely in that category. If book 4 doesn’t come out soon, she will probably never read it, and that will be sad.
Beth Woods… Investing a little extra time to write and polish will make it a book she’ll want to read to her children and grandchildren. My husband and I enjoy these stories as much as our 15, 10, and 8yr olds. ?
I have found these stories to be ones that even I as an adult LOVE to read – I haven’t outgrown them ? and look forward to reading the next one day. Thank you for your diligence to create such an enduring story.
Perhaps, however the themes and struggles the characters go through apply to all ages. The hope of the mending speaks to me as someone living in the now and not yet, and I absolutely LOVE this series.
Perhaps, but the themes and struggles the characters go through are understandable by people of all ages. And the hope of the mending speaks deeply to me as someone living in the now and the not yet, and I LOVE the entire series and cannot wait for more!
I don’t think that’ll happen. I’m sixteen, almost seventeen, and still hanging on to every update that comes. I will read these books until I’m ninety, if I have to.
Yep, I’ve been searching through the rest of the books with a magnifying glass, trying to find clues of what could happen in Book Four. No WAY could I ever be uninterested in these!
I’m 36 and love everything about these stories. There has never been a time in my life when I wouldn’t have loved them. I certainly don’t foresee a time I will stop loving a good book. A good thing is always worth waiting for!!
I’m 14 and I’ve been reading the books since the first came out. I’ve shared them with my siblings, friends, and cousin. We all love them, and I don’t plan to stop loving them anytime soon! Just because they are completely appropriate and display good Christian morals does NOT mean they are just for children. It’s wholesome family entertainment at it’s finest.
She will read it…maybe a little later but you dont just permanently outgrow good stories like these. Great job on your dedication to the story S.D., our family is thoroughly loving the story.
Just finished Ember Rising after devouring the first two books with my two youngest (sons 8 and 10) in the last two weeks. Mr. Smith, you have given me fresh inspiration to teach my children (and grandchild!) self denial, self sacrifice, self discipline, hope in One greater than themselves, and other-centeredness. Did you know your stories were parenting textbooks?
Here is wishing you many moments of creative inspiration to help make something lasting! My wife, myself, all four of my kids ranging in age from 6 to 12 have enjoyed the Green Ember series. We’ll all read it whenever it comes out regardless of our age at that time. Best wishes.
We appreciate this video, S.D.! We encourage you to take your time in the writing, as we know “No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally – and often far more – worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond.” – C. S. Lewis
Keep up the wonderful work!
Nyssa
Not so keen on the LFC shirt- but can forgive you.
Our family loves the books and we are grateful for what you are doing!
Come to Montana sometime!
Go Man City!
Happy to wait! We give most of our books to the library to “hold” for us so others can enjoy…but the Ember series will never leave our home (except to let some borrow 🙂 ). Thank you for not feeling rushed, and pushed to make something great, that could be legendary with patience and extra time. See you at the GHS SC!!
We are nearing the end of Ember Rising and weren’t sure if the story would be continuing or not. When I read the email to my boys (10,7, and 3) that a 4th book was coming, they all screamed. We’re anxiously anticipating the next book. Thanks for sharing your creation with us.
God bless you! We really want that fourth book, but we agree with Bilbo – we want you to take all the time you need to make it a good ending of it! It would be nice, however, if you can make it a bit faster than it takes for Frodo to leave the Shire.
Please consider possibly a paid access online event to replicate what’s being done at the live events. I’d love to attend one but can’t at this time due to the distance, especially with a new baby. My kids & I would LOVE to hear the new story & songs. We love your stories! Every chapter leaves us dying to know what happens next. (Currently listening to Book 3)
Thanks, Jill! We are always thinking about how to serve readers best with our limited time and resources. I hope we can come up with something down the road that helps. 🙂
Yes, please take your time! We want the best book possible, and I know that takes time. Also, feel free to split it into two books! ? I personally could see it taking two more to finish. Ha. I want to know more about Emma in the last book. I want to know where the Whitson Stone is. I don’t want the series to drag out, but, you know. Two more books. It could be amazing.
Thanks for all that you do! I love the books just as much as my kids, and I insist on reading them aloud before they get them!
My daughter will be needed a new copy of the Green Ember soon- she has read it over and over the cover is wearing off, and I am sure she will read book 4 whenever it comes out. Also hoping for a Pittsburgh live event 🙂
Take your time! I am an avid reader especially the classics. This the best series I have read in years and our whole family loves it. You have the talent power to write something that will endure. Thank you for sharing stories that will “make us brave!”
While my family hopes Book 4 will be out soon, we do appreciate your dedication to making it as good as the previous three, thank you. We respectfully disagree with those who are afraid of their kids outgrowing these books. The Hubs and I love these books just as much as our kids and we bought the set for our babysitter for a Christmas present completely confident that a 16 year old will love them! How could one outgrow rabbits with swords??!!!
Bearing the Flame,
Angela B. and Family
P.S. We made a Christmas ornament out of the sticker that came with our book order. 🙂 We hung it on our “destination tree” because that is the tree we put Christmas ornaments from places our family has been and your books take us to another place.

Hi all!
My name is Spencer and I’m 69 and retired. There is nothing like great literature especially a story that can grip your heart like the Green Ember series. Your as old, or as young as you feel.
Thankyou S.D. Smith and may God richly bless your talent
Hi Mr. smith,
I love your books soooo much, they are such wonderful books!!! I named my rabbit Pickett after the character!!!! I”m so excited for the 4th book to come out My mom listens to “Read aloud revival” and whenever you are on it she tells me so I can listen to it. Please know that I love your books and I am sure that you will create a wonderful 4th book that we will all love!!!!!!!!! Thank you, Selah
Mr. Smith, I love your books because from the very first one, when Heather is on the porch with Maggie Weaver, looking through the mist and imagining what might someday be, I got chills. I knew it was something deeper. The hope of the mending speaks deeply to me as someone who lives in the now and not yet. Thank you for sharing these stories!
My daughter (12 next week) received the first (e-book) as a birthday gift when she turned 9 from a fellow MK a few years ago. We’ve purchased all the other e-books ASAP, including the short ones. She loves them, but I’m right there with her. Last Christmas she got the most recent, and she & I raced to see who could finish first. She did–with 5 others younger than her, I stay busy. It’s been a shared thing for us. She wasn’t too happy about letting the next-youngest sister start reading them last summer, but I told her she was 9 when she got the first, so it’s become a coming-of-age-9 “thing” for the kids. Next one in line is anxiously waiting because she sees the others so absorbed, she knows it must be good. Keep it! Good, clean, bravery-inducing books for my brood of bookworms.
Thank you for the update!
Our family (2 parents, 4 teenagers) has loved each book, and we are anticipating the next one; but, please take the time you need to craft an enduring tale. There is nothing so disappointing as an ending that doesn’t live up to the beginning.
Take your time! We are excited about book 4, of course, it Bilbo is right! And you should write with both your heart and your head- so take all the time you need. We will all still be here waiting the book is ready! And in the meantime we can re-read the ones we have to prepare.
Thank you for taking the time you need to create a legendary book! I know that whenever it does come out it will be Amazing:) I’m almost seventeen, and I know that whenever the book DOES come out I will read it as soon as I can get my hands on it!
My husband and I found the Green Ember series through the recommendation of Sally Clarkson and we’re forever grateful! We teach Grade 2 and 3 and our favourite thing to do is to read aloud together… it is difficult for us to wait to read your books to our sons, who are 2 and under, but in the meantime we have been busy lending them to everyone we know. We love that you want to write books that will last and truly think that yours will, because they have such honest, enduring and relevant themes. But what we love most is how these themes are enveloped in incredibly captivating stories. We have read many children’s books and yours are a unique gift to the world! Thank-you.
Oh my goodness! My kids are so excited for your next book and they are busy coming up with ideas about what will happen next. You should hear their conversations! ?. My youngest (William Dean, 5) has decided his ‘pen name’ is WD Slease because he loves your books. Thank you so much for taking your time to craft another enduring masterpiece. Will you be at GHC CA again? We love your imagery for the kingdom! Blessings!
A new story? A new story! Let’s just face it, Mr. Smith’s books are very captivating and keep us in suspense so much, that often you can’t put it down.
Looking forward to Green Ember 4.
God Bless,
Heather
Your Green Ember series (and Tales of Old Natalia) is the first series that all four of my kids have really enjoyed. That’s saying a lot because not only are my kids a somewhat wide range in age, my oldest son is on the Autism spectrum and tends to stick with mostly nonfiction. As an adult, I find myself hiding in my closet just to read ahead. Your writing is classic and timeless. I have no doubt that the 4th book will be as well. Thank you for honoring the characters and the storyline as you craft the 4th book. Praying God will give you all you need as you work unto Him. ?
Go ahead and take your time! I’ll just have to read Ember Rising a 17th time. *sigh* (Yes, at the moment I have read over each of your books a minimum eight times each. Ember Rising happens to be my favourite. I and my cousins stayed up until four o’clock in the morning for a week straight to finish it. Now we have a Green Ember read-a-thon each time we see each other. I gave them the first book for Christmas this year and my cousin literally screamed!) Please continue to write passionate, quotable lines! My room’s walls are covered in inspiring quotes from your series.
All the Embers left me very hopeful. I cannot believe that, as a 43 year old, I am reading these books and recommending all 6 to every other dad that I know. May your pen continue to speak to us wherever we are, in the ups and downs of our lives, and give our youth these timeless examples of sacrifice, mission and love. Keep at it sir.
I agree wholeheartedly. I feel like this can be qualified as a ‘great story’ in this Sam quote.
“It’s like the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could things go back to the way they were when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something.”
Okay that was too long. But you get the point.
I love these books so much and love all the different personalities of the characters, how they all have their own things they are working on, but also how they are all striving together toward the same cause, and how they see the thing that they are holding on to, that “there is some good left in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.” And that they do not despair. I can’t wait for the fourth book, and I’m pretty sure I will be thinking, “Well, here at last, dear friends, comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-Earth. I will not say ‘do not weep’ for not all tears are evil.” And then I will probably just sit there and think about the books. And then re-read them all again.
We are super excited to hear there is to be another book. We are all waiting with anticipation, but PLEASE don’t hurry! These are definitely stories that you don’t outgrow. We all love them! (Parents, and 16 yr, 8, 6 yr olds). We are delighted with the short stories as well! So great to read how it all began and Jo’s story. A good reminder we are ALL on a journey. ♥️ Thank you for crafting a story worth handing down to the next generation.
Hello! The Bookclub I manage for my kids and their friends is reading Ember Rising this month and we are all dying to know if you have a release date in mind for the fourth book. We aren’t rushing you, we are just SO curious. Also, many inquiring young minds want to know if you’ve decided if there will be one or two more books?
I am super excited for the next book to come out!!!! Thank you Sam for creating such fun and interesting stories take all the time you need to write the next book. We can wait:)

We originally purchased these books to listen to over a long drive to visit family. I thought my children would enjoy them, and they DO! However, I can’t stop reading them over and over again! I love the story of redemption woven throughout the series! I have read them all at least three times and have picked up on so many themes I hadn’t discovered the first time. It is a beautiful story packed full of teachable moments! I could say that I can’t wait to purchase the forth book “for my kids”….but I would be just as eager to pick up a copy for myself! Thank you for such a beautiful story to read aloud to my family! This will be a treasured series in our family library for generations!
Love the Liverpool shirt!
Wish the brood could come to the live events, they sound great!
We need to do one in the Old Country! #YNWA

Wait…I’m 29.. Should I be outgrowing these sometime soon!?!? Please no!
🙂
Beth is right. Age does matter. These books are geared toward a younger audience. However, that being said, Mr Smith is a prolific writer.
Perhaps, however the themes and struggles the characters go through apply to all ages. The hope of the mending speaks to me as someone living in the now and not yet, and I absolutely LOVE this series.

I don’t think that’ll happen. I’m sixteen, almost seventeen, and still hanging on to every update that comes. I will read these books until I’m ninety, if I have to.
Exactly! I’m also sixteen, nearly seventeen, and I can’t wait to read this book! I just re-read the other three and enjoyed every word.
Thanks!
Yep, I’ve been searching through the rest of the books with a magnifying glass, trying to find clues of what could happen in Book Four. No WAY could I ever be uninterested in these!
Me too! every time I read them i’m trying to read in between the lines!
Same here I’m 15 right now and I can’t wait for Green Ember IV!!! I dont think you can ever outgrow these kind of stories
I’m 36 and love everything about these stories. There has never been a time in my life when I wouldn’t have loved them. I certainly don’t foresee a time I will stop loving a good book. A good thing is always worth waiting for!!

That’s crazy! Teach her the love of reading and she will never want the stop. We do not outgrow this need if it’s planted well…

Thank you for caring so much to invest the time to create something wonderful and meaningful.

Thank you, Mary! (I’m sorry, but I won’t be at the GHCs this year.)
You won’t? I thought I would be missing out, because I can’t go to Cincinnati this year due to my school schedule.

Ha! I just read that. I’ll do my best. 🙂
Thank you, Sara!
When are you coming to the far world of the InlandNorthwest?? I think Sarah M and I could drum up huge love for you… dude, make it happen! 🙂
Would love to!

So will Book 4 be the end of the series? If so, are you planning to continue writing after you’ve finished the Green Ember series?
I think so. (Not 100% sure yet.) I’m not sure about what’s next. 🙂
My daughter will be needed a new copy of the Green Ember soon- she has read it over and over the cover is wearing off, and I am sure she will read book 4 whenever it comes out. Also hoping for a Pittsburgh live event 🙂

Thank you!
Happy Writing, Lindsey

Thank you so much.
