Accidents Happen (Making Believe)

“Pretend the girl accidentally loved the dragon.”

My son, 3, to his sister, 5.

About 8/10 sentences from my son begin with “Pretend…”

That’s good. I have a theory that make believe helps us make believing more authentic as we grow older. Because we are more than merely rational beings, we need imagination to try to appreciate the infinite glory of God. We are made for wonder. That’s why we love music, books, the Grand Canyon, and why we long for God with more than just intellectual curiosity.

I want to be clear that I am not knocking reason, nor propositional truth, nor the role of fact and reason in belief. But I am saying that we believe with more than our intellectual assent alone.

But that’s a big subject.
