An Adventure For Adventurers

I get so many kind letters and notes and I’m really grateful for them all. I appreciate the encouragement! This one stood out to me and I asked if I could share it. Please see my note at the bottom. –Sam

Dear Mr. Smith,

I wish you could have seen us yesterday! My husband and I and our four kids were piled into our SUV driving through a snowstorm on the Tibetan plateau. We were listening to Ember Falls, and the children were still and quiet, loving your wild tale! We listened for hours as we drove over high mountain passes, crossed the Yangtze and then the Yellow River, pausing only to put the car into four wheel drive, or to stare in awe at a lonely wolf loping across the barren grassland. The sun set over the mountains and we drove through the dark as the story held us in its spell. The kids were not the only ones caught up in the adventures of Heather, Picket, Emma, and their companions!

We look forward to finding out what happens in Book 3. Thank you for writing such a great story!

A pretty wonderful note, yes? Ember Falls was an adventure for adventurers. What an honor! I find it striking that so many families who have embraced these stories are themselves living stories of adventure worthy of tales well-told. I want to live that kind of life too, to be alive to what I’m being called to, wherever that may be. With the blessing, so may we all! –Sam

  1. That’s awesome! I really like what you said about living the adventure you’re being called to. Epic pictures. Looks like Middle-Earth!

  2. I love the pictures. So beautiful. I believe this is actually pretty near were our family lives. 🙂 I have been wanting to write and say thank you for your incredible books. My 11 year old son hates reading. He has struggled for the past year with learning to read, and because it was such a chore for him to read he developed a distaste for books. This has made my book loving heart so sad. However, when we recently discovered your books my son became hooked and couldn’t put the books down. He is anxiously awaiting your 3rd book (he asks me several times a week, “mom has he written a new book yet?!”). Thank you for writing stories that have put a spark of hope in my heart and ignited a new love for books in my son.
May we all endeavor to live “stories of adventure worthy of tales well-told.”
Many blessings to you and your family!
    Liz

    1. Liz, thank you so much for this kind note. It is very encouraging and I’m so happy to hear about your son. The same thing happened for me with a “break-though” book and I have loved reading ever since. (But I was older.)

I’m amazed at the reader response from Asia. I do not understand it, but I’m happy to hear. Somebody must be passing my books around. What an unlooked for joy.

Please say hello to your son for me, and tell him I am working hard on the next book.

      Grace and peace to you,
      Sam

  3. We also fell in love with your stories while on a family adventure in the mountains of Oman on the Arabian Peninsula. I’ll send pictures.
