Cynicism and Joy

“For me it is amazing to experience daily the radical difference between cynicism and joy. Cynics seek darkness wherever they go. They point always to approaching dangers, impure motives, and hidden schemes…People who have come to know the joy of God do not deny the darkness, but they choose not to live in it.”

Henri Nouwen

  1. Good quote, Sam — reminds me of your own quote about digging through a septic tank to find a wedding ring, and just going for a swim in it. The latter of which is an apt a metaphor for cynicism as you’ll find.

I’ve not read any Nouwen, so I don’t know where he takes this, but I might add the reason the cynic seeks darkness everywhere: he has not the courage even to hope for a comedic end of a story. It takes guts to stare down the possibility of comedy.

  2. Great quote Samuel Dracula Smith. Jonathan Rogers touched on this in his talk at Hutchmoot. Worth a listen if it becomes available. I decided I trend toward cynicism, and I don’t like it.
