Jacobs: Don’t Be Daunted By Scolds (Or Be One): Read For Joy

I am eager to read this book. Jacobs’ The Narnian was fantastic. This quotation is a sign of good things to follow, no doubt. -Sam

“For heaven’s sake, don’t turn reading into the intellectual equivalent of eating organic greens, or (shifting the metaphor slightly) some fearfully disciplined appointment with an elliptical trainer of the mind in which you count words or pages the way some people fix their attention on the ‘calories burned’ readout—some assiduous and taxing exercise that allows you to look back on your conquest of Middlemarch with grim satisfaction. How depressing. This kind of thing is not reading at all.”

  1. This looks like a great book. Thanks for the tip!

I reposted it on my blog (it’s fun to see how far the trail of hat tips go …. Reinke… Smith… Atkinson… ?) with a picture I found of a baby perplexed by what he is reading. I think you might like it.

Thanks again, your blog is always a sure source of inspiration for me (beautiful story about your father, by the way- very moving and honest).

    Cheers,
    Charles
