What Causes You to Buy a Book? (please don’t say “nothing”)

1. Friend’s recommendation – 49%
2. Familiarity with author – 45%
3. Description on jacket – 32%

4. Reviews – 22%

5. Advertisement – 21%

6. Place on bestsellers list – 17%

7. Reading group pick – 16%

8. Cover design – 12%

The moral of the story is, I think, that I need to get to know you, or get you to know one of my friends.

What do you think of this list?

I remember Orson Scott Card saying that there are two things, and two things only that sold books:

1. Word of Mouth
2. Book Cover

He believed book tours, signings, and most marketing is a waste of time.
