    The Black Star of Kingston

A century before Heather and Picket’s adventures in The Green Ember, a displaced community fights for hope on the ragged edge of survival.

    My place beside you
    My blood for yours
    Till the Green Ember rises
Or the end of the world.

Whitson Mariner and Fleck Blackstar face old fears and new enemies, forging a legend that will echo through the ages.

Old wars haunt. New enemies threaten. An oath is born.

    A hero rises.

    • “For readers who loved The Green Ember, well—you’re in luck. S. D. Smith has done it again. The Black Star of Kingston is a book I’ll be shouting about from the rooftops for a long time coming. Jam-packed with harrowing adventure, startling courage, and the luscious vocabulary we all love in Smith’s stories, Black Star will not disappoint!”

    • “What a rollicking good story this is. Yes, it’s a children’s story, but it stirs the blood and makes you want to take sword in had to fight alongside the characters in the story. The Black Star of Kingston is not only a children’s book; it is a book to be read by adults to children—for the benefit of both.”
      Glynn Young
poet and author of Dancing Priest and A Light Shining
    • “I loved this book! A much shorter preamble to the beautiful and poignant book, The Green Ember, this is a true high adventure with great characters, suspense, monsters and chilling bravery. A really wonderful treasure.”

I never set out to start a small business. I set o I never set out to start a small business. I set out to tell a story to my kids, an improvised tale on a porch in West Virginia that somehow grew into a family vocation that just launched the 12th Green Ember book and its companion game.

The reason it grew is simple: you showed up. You supported our very first Kickstarter. You took a chance on a little book of rabbits with swords, and you passed it along. You shared it with your kids, your friends, your libraries, your classrooms. You left kind reviews. You became our allies, and this small family business exists because of that partnership.

We aren’t a big corporation with endless resources or teams of marketers. We’re just a family and a handful of friends trying to make good things—stories that help children imagine their place in a world that desperately needs them. That’s our work. And when you support us, you aren’t just buying a book. You’re enabling us to keep doing this strange and beautiful work the world needs.

Like the seemingly harmless rabbits of our Appalachian landscape, we never expected to see our stories rise and fight. But hope is worth fighting for, and these are stories anchored in hope.
