Arming Our Children’s Imagination
You can say, ‘God is powerful.’ That’s a true statement. But we don’t really know what that means until we have a story.
When Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, or Jairus’s daughter, or parts the Red Sea, then you have the experience of what it means for God to be powerful or loving.
The best stories, both in fiction and in history, don’t subtract truth—they add meaning.
We need to give our kids a robust, vicarious memory of stories that arm them. When they face evil, sickness, death, or suffering (and they will), those stories become armor. They remind them of heroes like Aragorn or the prophet Samuel. Mere information can’t do that.
Only a story gets into the heart and teaches them not just to know what’s right, but to love what’s right.
Audiobook Update!
We are putting the finishing touches on the Green Ember: Helmer in the Dragon Tomb audiobook and it will be ready soon! (Kickstarter backers, that made its way to your inbox today 👀) While you wait, meet the audiobook narrator: Jake Phillips.
You may recognize him from The Cultured Bumpkin and his hilarious take of If Pride & Prejudice Happened in the South.

Jake Phillips lives in Mississippi with his wife and four kids. He works out of a tornado shelter in his backyard that doubles as a recording studio.
He loves spending time with his family in national parks and battlefields, and enjoys classic literature, pottery, watches, and coffee (he drank a lot of it while recording this audiobook, but edited out all of the slurping sounds).
Because of your incredible support, we are receiving a surge in orders. Our team is working diligently to get everything out as quickly as possible and we’re so grateful for your patience.
Thanks for being on my side.
I’m on your side,
Sam
