The Kingdom is Coming so Love Your Future Family Now

This time of year is packed with special days like Father’s Day, West Virginia Day, and Juneteenth, all of which are worth celebrating to me. I have written about the confluence before, and maybe it’s not too difficult to figure out why I’d care about those days. I’m a guy who grew up in West Virginia, spent my teenage years in Africa where my first church membership was in a Zulu assembly, and always wanted to be a father. I also have had the best father I guy could hope for.

So, I’m thankful. I’m thankful for my state. I love West Virginia and I’m committed to being here. I am committed to the kingdom vision, the Christian vision for unity in Christ that is oneness (not sameness) and fully rooted in love. Christianity is the most diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-racial movement in history by a long shot. Our king in heaven is a Jew, but all tribes and tongues are invited into the family, even Appalachians like me! I’m grateful for my dad, and for the privilege of being father to my kids.

Maybe you’ve read my book The Found Boys, which I think of (in part) as a corrective to the fashionable idea that racial guilt defines us forever and is unforgivable and we can never be free of guilt or grow and change. We can, and we will, in Christ. We have to, because the kingdom is coming.

The Jack Zulu books are not about race or ethnicity, but colliding cultures are a theme for our hero and the world(s) he fights in. I’d love for you to give those books a chance. I wrote them with my excellent co-author son, Josiah C. Smith, and I love them. If you haven’t yet, let me make it easy for you to join in…

Thank you for writing such incredible books as the Green Ember series. I’ve actually not read the Jack Zulu books, but my sister has listened to them.

For a long time, I knew about those books about rabbits, but one summer, I just started listening to the first book. I don’t even remember why. Well, I was soon hooked. I had NO idea the characters would pull me in so much, and the story would be so gripping! As I journeyed through the story, I was wondering what the bigger point/theme of this book was. (I am someone who believes books need very good reasons to be written) It strikes me as funny because I didn’t catch the bigger picture until the end of the last book. That’s when everything hit me. That’s when I realized that the great war between the Prey Lords and the rabbits…is real. That’s when I realized what the Mending was. And I was lit on fire. These stories are incredible examples of simple characters who stood up and fought for what was right. Stories like these encourage and feed my soul, teaching me to do the same and bear the flame.

Thank you for writing such brave books.
